The Ozil Goal AI Trend, Explained
Where the goal comes from, why TikTok is putting grandmas, friends and pets in Özil’s place, and how the AI versions are made.
Last updated: 2026-10-17
The Ozil goal AI trend is a TikTok format that replays Mesut Özil’s late winner for Arsenal against Ludogorets on 1 November 2016 with someone else as the scorer. The AI version keeps the move (the chip over the onrushing goalkeeper, the two defenders sliding past, the calm finish into the empty net) and swaps Özil for a grandmother, a friend in jeans, a dinosaur or a pet. On Ozil Goal AI you can make your own version from one photo.
The Original: Özil’s Goal Against Ludogorets
The goal came in the UEFA Champions League group stage, away at the Bulgarian champions PFC Ludogorets Razgrad, in Sofia on 1 November 2016. Ludogorets were 2–0 up after 15 minutes. Xhaka and Giroud scored before half-time to bring Arsenal level, and the winner came in the 87th minute:
- Mohamed Elneny played Özil in behind the defence.
- The goalkeeper rushed out, and Özil chipped the ball over him.
- He went round the keeper and took the ball on.
- Near the empty goal he stopped and waited while two defenders slid in and past him.
- Then he rolled the ball into the empty net.
Arsenal won 3–2 and booked their place in the last 16. Match reports: Sky Sports and ESPN. To watch the real goal, see UEFA’s TikTok post.
How the AI Trend Took Off
- From about 9–10 October 2026, TikTok users started posting AI edits that put someone else in Özil’s place, with the same moves. Google searches for “ozil goal” and “ozil ai” started climbing around the same days.
- Most posts are made with CapCut templates, which paste your face onto a short preview, or are tutorials for them. The most-viewed tutorial we found, posted by @hgf.movie on 11 October 2026, has about 4.3 million views.
- On 12 October 2026, Özil joined in. TNT Sports Brasil reported that he shared an AI version of the goal on his own Instagram (@m10_official): in TNT’s words, “the owner’s version”.
- On 15 October 2026, his birthday, UEFA posted the original goal on its TikTok. Özil was born on 15 October 1988.
Why People Put Someone Else in Özil’s Place
The goal is remembered for its composure: after beating the keeper, Özil doesn’t rush the finish, he waits for two defenders to slide past him. That pause works as a punchline with anyone in the lead role, and the less likely the scorer, the funnier it gets. The versions seen on TikTok include:
- grandmas and parents;
- heavy-set guys in shorts;
- friends in everyday clothes;
- cartoon and game characters;
- dinosaurs dribbling a watermelon;
- a goalkeeper or a pet taking the shot.
What the AI Version Keeps and What Your Photo Changes
What stays the same in every video
- The long through ball and the goalkeeper rushing out.
- The chip, the run round the keeper and the touch on the bounce.
- The wait by the empty goal as two defenders slide past.
- The calm side-foot into the empty net.
- A floodlit night match in a big stadium full of fans, filmed as one continuous tracking shot from the touchline.
What your photo changes
- The scorer: their face and build come from your photo, or an animal takes the role if you upload a pet.
- The outfit: there’s no kit picker, so the scorer plays in whatever they wear in the photo.
Our video is a new AI recreation, not the 2016 broadcast. The stadium is generic, the goalkeeper wears a plain dark kit and the defenders plain green kits, with no names, numbers, club badges or sponsor logos. Neither Mesut Özil nor any real player appears in it.
